ANNUAL REPORT • A 2008. ÉV - Summary of the Scientific Lecture Series Held at the Museum of Fine Arts in 2008

The audience of the closing ceremony of the centenary had the opportunity to see the most recent acquisition of the Collection in the Baroque Hall. The Hellenistic marble relief —a beautiful present from the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Education to honour the occasion —was exhibited for this event only (fig. 21). The relief was returned to storage that very night. The public will have the chance to see it again in a future exhibition of the Highlighted Works of Art series. The second century of the history of the Collection of Classical Antiquities has begun. Long may its story continue. Árpád Miklós Nagy SUMMARY OF THE SCIENTIFIC LECTURE SERIES HELD ATTHE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS IN 2008 Judit Sebő: In the Spirit of Friendship, 2 April The lecture entitled In the Spirit of Friendship featured two pen-and-ink drawings linked to Biedermeier Vienna. One of these works bears the signature of Joseph Schütz and contains deceptively faithful copies of engravings, which initially needed to be identified. The direction of further research was determined by Adam Bartsch's etching —seen at the top —made after Martin von Molitor's drawing, given as a nameday present, and depicting a prancing Spaniard dog. Although Schütz attended the Viennese academy, and thus was a student of Molitor and Bartsch, no other personal data came to light in connection to this drawing. The other work researched is dated 1821 and signed with a Hungarian-sounding name, Joseph Dukai. It contains numerous cards with text admonishments about how to live a moral life and oblivion, popular at the time. These are likely to be the original creations of their maker, based on actual greetings cards. The two pen-and-ink drawings are linked by the genre of greeting cards with pictures and texts that were popular in Vienna at the time. Thus, they are not only interesting items but valuable documents of an era too.
