ANNUAL REPORT • A 2008. ÉV - MÓNIKA KUMIN: On the New Exhibitions of the Vasarely Museum
examining the foundations of concrete art, the thirteen artists regard (nonrepresentational) art as "exemplification" and an activity "showing" sensory phenomena, as opposed to "imaging" representational art. The next exhibition, bearing the title Concept Conception, Extracts, presented a visual anthology of the past thirty years of concept art in Hungary. Polemising against János Major's famous "thesis" — "Budapest is the necropolis of ideas", one of the most important premises of the exhibition is the continuity of a conceptual way of thinking in Hungarian avantgarde art. Most of the displayed w r orks dated from the seventies, some of wdiich 17 (Gyula Gulyás's Hungarian Cobblestone, FRANÇOIS MORELLET. RECREATION. 1994 Gyu ] a p auer ' s Demonstration-sign Forest, Sándor Pinczehelyi's Sickle and Hammer and J. Attila Erdődy's Transparent Transparent) addressed the issue of political reflection and the criticism of the political system. The other group of artefacts —partly related to the previous one —can be categorised as works of self-reflective concept art, often using humour, such as László Beke's 1971 Idea documentation, Imre Bak's semiotic experiments, as well as concept works of art by Endre Tót ÇTm Fed Up with Painting'"), Károly Halász (Private Transmission), Tamás StAuby (Czechoslovak Radio, Life Space) and the latest installations by Endre Koronczi (It Wasn't Me) and Ottó Vincze (The Bust Measure of a Star Sign). Following the curatorial concept, Hungarian aspirations were presented in an international and regional (Central Eastern European) context. As a kind of historical hommage, special mention must be made of the artists who participated in the 1972 Balatonboglár chapel exhibition, namely Jifi Valoch, Petr Stembera, Stano Filko, and Rudolf Sikora. Vera Molnar's series entitled Hommage à Dürer, to which she continuously adds new works, is a rethinking and visual interpretation of mathematical laws. Morellet's neon tube installations
