The catalogue begins with four studies

—a study each by Michael Philipp, Michael Thimann, Miklós Gálos, and Axel Vecsey

—exploring the theory and practise of Mannerist art and the formation of the Mannerist collection of the Museum of Fine Arts. Sixteen members of the museum's three departments wrote the commentaries to the reproductions of excellent quality found in the catalogue, thus leaving an authentic document to posterity about this short-lived exhibition.
