ANNUAL REPORT - A 2006. ÉV - ANDREA CZÉRE: Under the Spell of Rome: Etchings of Giovanni Battista Piranesi

26 INTERIOR VIEW OF THE EXHIBITION IN SZOLNOK In Szolnok the splendidly restored synagogue with its large spaces provided a perfect airy background for Piranesi's large works, while in Győr the Vaczy Péter Collection, housed in the former hospice, invited the viewer to take a closer look and to spare a moment for reflection with its more friendly and intimate atmosphere. The selected works were representative of the artist's Capriccios, made of ancient ruins and relics of buildings and sculptures, outlining the artistic achievements of Piranesi in this field, whereas his large scale perspective townscapes with their wide angle of view eternalized the ancient and Baroque buildings of Rome. We preferred to show those Roman views which would best remind the public of the parts and monuments of the city that are perhaps familiar to them as tourists: Saint Peter's Square, Trevi Fountain, the Forum Romanum, the great basilicas, the Castel Sant'Angelo, the Pyramid of Cestius and other famous buildings of the Eternal City. The curator was assisted in the organization of the exhibition by Dora Romek, while a valuable contribution was made by Zsolt Berta and his team as for the installation. Andrea Czére
