DÁGI, MARIANNA: 'Tinkers' and 'Patchers': Some Notes on the Ancient Repairs of Greek Vases
Traces of repair in the stubs of the handle: On the left stub there is a hole drilled at an angle from down upward. There is a vertical hole on the right stub drilled also from down upward. Another horizontally drilled hole joins the upper part of this hole on the left. A groove on the body in line with the horizontally drilled hole bears witness to accidental damage during drilling (fig. 22. a). There are remains of lead in the holes and glue on the stubs. The holes are approximately 3 mm in diameter. In fragments of the broken handle: The handle was broken into three pieces. The piece matching the right handle stub on the body bears an angular hole drilled from the interior of the handle towards the lower part of it. This is connected with a channel to the hole on the lower part of the stub on the body. On the interior of the handle fragment the clay is flaked off around the edge of the hole on a spot about 1 cm in diameter. So there are three drill holes on this part of the handle connected with channels. It means that only one wire or staple was enough to fix the handle. It could be threaded through the hole in this fragment of the handle, the vertical hole in the stub on the body matching this fragment and the horizontal hole in the stub in sequence and simultaneously. There is a drill hole in the fragment matching the left handle stub on the body with one channel at both edges. These channels led to the hole of the left handle-stub. Thus on this part of the handle we can observe two holes that could be connected with one wire or staple through the channels (fig. 22. b). 22. b The broken handle with Antique holes and channels.
