DÁGI, MARIANNA: 'Tinkers' and 'Patchers': Some Notes on the Ancient Repairs of Greek Vases

21. c Decoration on the shoulder of the epichysis. Budapest Museum of Fine Arts During the modern restoration the broken spout was fixed to the neck. The missing part of the neck was completed with a 3 mm thick plaster disk. The neck and spout was filled with plaster from which a brass wire 1.5 cm long and 3 mm in diameter bulges. There is a 4 mm long blind hole in the fracture of the handle stem on the top of the spout. A similar blind hole is observable in the other stub of the handle 77 (fig. 21. d). The filling and the wire in the neck, 78 and also the two holes in the handle, are modern, for there are no traces of repair on the exterior of the handle, and there are remains of glue on the fractures. The holes are 2 mm in diameter. 21. d Modern drill holes in the fractures of the handle. Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts The drill holes in the fractures of the handle are reminiscent of those blind holes of the epichysis lip belonging to the Gnathia lekythos with inv. no. 50.192. (See n. 65.) Based on the similarities of the restoration method it can be assumed that the same person restored both objects. The end of the wire was cut with a pair of cutters.
