DÁGI, MARIANNA: 'Tinkers' and 'Patchers': Some Notes on the Ancient Repairs of Greek Vases

4. Fragment of a bucchero vase with stamped decoration (fig. 12) Inv. no. T.788. Second half of the 6 th century BC. From the collection of József Fleissig. Bibi.: Szilágyi, J.Gy., CVA Hongrie 1, 34, pl. 5, nos. 5-6. Restored: the broken parts are stuck together and reinforced with wire inside. There are four cylindrical holes above the lower edge of the fragment. The clay is flaked off on the upper rim of three holes and on the inferior rim of one hole (fig. 12). Two holes are found at the stuck-together fractures, clearly indicating that the holes were made before sticking. Half of one hole is missing. The holes are 3.5 mm in diameter. 12. Antique holes of the fragment of a bucchero vase with stamped decoration. Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts 5. Etruscan black-figure kyathos (figs. 13. a-d) Inv. no. 51.835. Follower of the Micali Painter. First quarter of the 5 th century BC. From the collection of Elemér Kund. Bibi: Vezető 1947,41, no. 3; Szilágyi, J.Gy., CVA Hongrie 1, 57-58, pl. 18, nos. 5-6. Restored: completions on the handle. Traces of repair with staples and channels can be reconstructed according to the plaster completion: six cylindrical holes are clearly detectable. The holes on the exterior are filled with plaster, and therefore observable only from the interior of the handle. The clay is flaked off at the edge of the holes (figs. 13. c-d). The holes and shape of the plaster completion indicate that there must have been four pairs of holes. Four channels were cut only on the exterior of the handle. Each of them is quadrangular with parallel edges and connects two holes (figs. 13. a-b). The holes are 2 mm (three of them) and 3 mm (three of them) in diameter.
