SALLAY, DÓRA: A Proposal for a Baptism of Christ-Lunette by Guidoccio Cozzarelli
opportunity to receive new ideas from the more experienced painter; in fact, even a similar collaboration as for the Santa Barbara altarpiece cannot be excluded. 39 The altarpiece to which this surmised lunette belonged remains to be identified, since no work or document is now known that could be brought into connection with an altarpiece painted in this period. Further findings may shed light on several further issues such as the dedication title, commissioning, original location or even an eventual collaboration. My purpose here has been only to call attention to, and to suggest ways of interpretation for, a little known but important early work of Cozzarelli, which also seems to mark a key phase in the formation of ideas that led to the Baptism of Christ altarpiece in Sinalunga. DÓRA SALLAY Translated by the author 39 Ramboux's attribution of the Angels to Matteo instead of Cozzarelli is, of course, more than understandable in view the two painters' easily confusable styles. This discrepancy is, then, best interpreted this way. Nonetheless, 1 would not like to exclude definitively the improbable but conceivable possibility that Ramboux's above-noted remark („Theil eines grösseren Gemäldes von Matteo di Giovanni da Siena von 1448") is explained with the central register having been executed - and signed and dated - by Cozzarelli's master.
