SALLAY, DÓRA: A Proposal for a Baptism of Christ-Lunette by Guidoccio Cozzarelli
14. Guidoccio Cozzarelli: St. John the Evangelist. Private collection 31 Tempera and gold on horizontally grained wood, diam. 29 cm. The landscape background appears to be entirely repainted around the figure. As the form, iconography, and the grain of the support suggest, this work is a fragment of a predella decorated with a series of medallions that showed, probably, a Man of Sorrows in the center, a Mater Dolorosa to the left, this piece to the right, and perhaps additional figures at both ends. Although the size of this medallion seems fairly large for a predella, a surviving section of the horizontal edge of the original plank at the top indicates that the medallion filled the entire height of the predella, which thus measured about 30 cm in height, a standard size for predellas. The figurai type is comparable, as Vilmos Tátrai has noted, with a St. John the Evangelist predella-medallion attributed to Neroccio in the Christian Museum, Esztergom (inv. 55.172). Cozzarelli's medallion was exhibited at the XXIII Biennale Mostra Mercato Internazionale dell'Antiquariato, Palazzo Corsini, Florence, SeptemberOctober, 2003 (Giuseppe Piva, Piva & C. srl, Milan, whom I thank also here for the photograph and the permission to examine this piece).
