We continued examinations of this kind all through the processes of cleaning and transferring, and the findings were instrumental in throwing new light on the technique used in the present painting as well as the nineteenth-century methods of transfer and restoration. The picture was executed on a wooden panel. Observation of the back surface of the detached painting showed that the original panel may have been constituted of either three planks, each being ca. 50-60 cm wide, or five pieces of varied measures, ca. 30^10 cm wide, respectively. The height of the panel was 200 cm.
