FORRAI, KORNÉLIA HOÓS, MARIANNA-SOMOS, ÉVA: The Research and Restoration of a Painting on Panel, Transferred to Canvas, by Domenico Puligo. Madonna and Child with Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch

The face of Saint Roch before cleaning, in ordinary light stretcher before the detached and already by two different canvases reinforced painting was fixed to it seems to be more probable, nevertheless, the possibility that the bottom canvas (or both of them) was laid over the actual support during a later relining cannot be excluded. The painting was highly grimed, dried up and age-worn; it has become loose and wrinkled at the corners, the adhesion between the linings disappeared in some places. The considerable paint losses were filled and retouched. The retouched areas have undergone a discolouring (figs. 24-25). The varnish layer has become dull, opaque, and grimed. THE SUPPOSED HISTORY OF THE TRANSFERRING AND THE FINDINGS OF THE SCIENTIFIC EXAMINATIONS Once the research of the documentary history of the painting and the determination of condition had been finished, we furthered on with the non-invasive phototechnological examinations (ultraviolet fluorescence, infrared reflectography). More recently applied paint appears dark under fluorescent light, showing areas of inpainting; layers of varnish fluoresce in greenish light, which can verify its thickness and multilayered nature (figs.
