The painting after treatment The Madonna of the Harpies as well as with Puligo's altarpiece in the Santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi in Florence, which displays the Madonna accompanied by a number of saints. 3 Between the two parts of the date (MD...XXVII) on the pedestal front, the picture is inscribed with the familiar monogram of Andrea del Sarto: two 'A' initials, one of them upside down, in ligature, representing the artist's name: Andrea d'Agnolo. 4 In the present picture, there is only a single horizontal line between the two elements of the 3 The Madonna of the Harpies, Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi, 207 by 178 cm. The support is composed of three planks. - The Virgin and the Child with Saint John the Baptist, Saint Mark (?), Saint Peter, Saint Bernard, Saint Paul and Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Florence, Santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi, 175 by 214 cm. 4 Similar monograms can be found, for example, in the following pictures: The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, The Sacrifice of Isaac (both Dresden, Gemäldegalerie), The Virgin and the Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist (Roma, Galleria Borghese). Several paintings, however, show different signatures: for example, there is an inscription to read AND. SAR. FLO. FAB. in the above mentioned Madonna of the Harpies as well as on a Lamentation in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
