The Year 2002

TWO MASTERPIECES BY PERUGINO, RAFFAELLO's MASTER MAY 22- JUNE 14, 2002 CURATOR OF THE EXHIBITION! VILMOS TÁTRAI The Department of the Supervision of Museums of the Province Umbria organized a chamber exhibition in Budapest under the auspices of the Italian Institute. On this occasion, the Museum of Fine Arts presented a recently restored large altarpiece and a fragment of an altar by Perugino (Pietro Vannucci, Città di Pieve, c. 1448 - Fontignano, 1523), a master unfortunately underrepresented in the collections of the Museum. The painting exhibited in Budapest, The Adoration of the Magi (fig.71), was composed for the Santa Maria dei Servi sul Colle Landone church in Perugia probably at the beginning of the 1470s. This altarpiece, rooted in the tradition of late Gothic representations, at the same time, reflecting the influence of contemporary Florentine and Umbrian masters, was the first large-scale commission of the young painter in Perugia. The other piece of the chamber exhibition, a painting depicting the Archangel Gabriel, was composed in a later, more mature period of the master for the high altar of the Sant' Agostino church in Perugia. The originally rectangular panel fell victim to the repeated reshapings of the altar, whereby it received its final tondo form. o. R. Translated by T. K.
