VICTOR M. SCHMIDT: A Duccesque Painting Representing St John the Baptist Bearing Witness in the Museum of Fine Arts
CONCLUSION To sum up, the panel of St John the Baptist Bearing Witness cannot have been part of Duccio's Maestà for the high altar of Siena Cathedral, for the simple reason that Christ's garments do not match those worn by him in Duccio's great altarpiece. For iconographie and stylistic reasons the panel was most likely part of a predella dedicated to the Baptist painted by the workshop of Ugolino di Nerio. To date, no other parts of this ensemble have come to light. Already in Ramboux's time the Budapest picture had been transferred to canvas, which suggests that the original panel, as well as other possible parts of the same ensemble, were in a bad state of preservation.
