SZÉPE, HELENA KATALIN: Civic and artistic identity in illuminated Venetian documents

and capitano of Bassano, 1544, now in the British Library (fig. 46). 21 The central motif of the recipient in prayer to the seated Virgin and Child, in front of a deep mountainous landscape in the Pizzamano manuscript is in turn the formula used for a later commissione now in the Széchényi Library, addressed to a member of the Contarini del Zaffo family of 1559-1567 (fig 47). 22 Although the latter manuscript utilizes a format found in many To. Ve miniatures, the miniatures are painted in a looser hand close to that of the so-called 'Mannerist Master' discussed below, and may indicate that the Mannerist Master trained in the To. Ve Master workshop. Whereas the illumination programs of masters such as To. Ve are repeated and depend on patterns which their assistants used as well, the illumination programs of three of four manuscript leaves appointing Francesco Duodo (1518-1592) to various offices of the Venetian Republic are unique, and eventually seem to form an organized promotion of civic honor which celebrated his substantial role as commander of galleys in the victory at Lepanto in 1571. The innovations of the late full-page illuminations can be credited both to Duodo as recipient and possible patron, and to the miniaturists themselves. The commissione for Francesco Duodo's first state assignment, as captain of merchant galleys to Beirut, survives in the Correr, but the opening leaf is missing, which suggests that it was illuminated. 23 The first surviving dogale leaf of which I am aware for Francesco Duodo is that from his appointment as bailo and provveditore of Corfu, in 1559 (fig. 48). 24 The images of this leaf are also by the To. Ve Master, and center on the themes of justice and fame. Venice is personified as Justice with sword and scales, as she was depicted in sculpture on the Ducal Palace and in paintings above government offices. 25 She is seated on the lion throne of Solomon within a monumen21 London. British Library, Ms. Additional 20916, 6. Illustrated in Zuccolo Padrono, op.cit. (note 7) 59, fig. 87. An inscription below the portrait of Pizzamano states his age as 32 ('anno aetatis XXXIL). The account book of the painter Jacopo Bassano records the commission of April 12, 1545, for a 'Christ in the Boat with the Apostles' for Pietro Pizzamano (the 'Miraculous Draught of the Fishes' now in a private collection, London) while he was podestà.
