The Museum of Fine Arts in 2000

The House of the Nation August 17 - December 31, 2000 Curator: Eszter Gábor In connection with the Hungary's millennium celebration, the exhibition presented the course of the development of major buildings from the Buda castle to Imre Steindl's parliament with the help of the surviving plans: a few modest engravings of the Buda Parliament, Mihály Pollack's entire series of drawings, the surviving plans of the 1844 competition, the plans made in 1861 (a greater part of which had just been found in the National Archives), the plans of the Lower House and the material of the 1882 competition (60 sheets, including Viennese Otto Wagner's so far unpublished full series of plans). The row of plans ended with the modifications by Imre Steindl, which showed what changes Steindl, had made up to the final version. The exhibition was terminated by Lajos Rauscher 's series of watercolours presenting the Parliament for the Paris World Exposition of 1900. Master drawings: From Dürer to Dali September 14 - December 31, 2000 Curator: Teréz Gerszi It was nearly ten years ago that a similar exhibition of master drawings, the highly successful "From Leonardo to Chagall" was staged. There were two circumstances that called for a presentation of the graphic masterpieces in our collection. The restoration of the exhibition room of prints and drawings was completed and the millenary of the Hungarian State's foundation was also to be celebrated. The material of the exhibition is presented in a representative book published by Karinthy Publishers in 1999. Massimo Campigli (1895-1971) 6 October - 18 November, 2000 Curator: János Eisler Thirty works by Massimo Campigli could be seen at the Museum, organized by the Institute of Italian Culture (fig. 100). The works were lent by Italian private and public collections and some by the painter's son Nicola Campigli. His mature works of symbolical meaning - female figures, self-portraits, portraits, theatre and everyday scenes of a peculiar atmosphere - are easily recognizable by their colour scheme, which is reminiscent of vase painting, the geometric simplification of forms, the balance between past and present, dream and reality.
