89. Pieter Symonsz. Potter: Merry Company. Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts Pieter Codde, Jacob Duck, Anthonie Palamedesz. or Jacob van Velsen, while the works of numerous other masters have been catalogued as his. 45 The situation is further complicated inasmuch as Olis frequently copied or imitated, at times demonstrably, his contemporaries' works. 46 Sturla Gudlaugsson had already observed that the painting seems to be at least ten years earlier than the date inscribed in it, and was the first to suggest a connection to certain works by Pieter Symonsz. Potter (ca. 1597-1652). 47 The Budapest Merry Company indeed shows conspicuous stylistic and motif similarities to Potter's signed painting in Copenhagen, dated 1629, which has been cited by Gudlaugsson as a parallel (fig. 90). 48 We find figures of analogous types in numerous other works by Potter from 45 In connection with Jan Olis see among others: Le Bihan, 0.,L 'or et l'ombre. La peinture hollandaise du dix-septième et dix-huitième siècles au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, exhibition catalogue, (Musée des Beaux-Arts) Bordeaux 1990, 229-231. 46 For example we may observe the characteristic figures of Anthonie Palamedesz. in a recently auctioned painting attributed to Jan Olis: Christie's, New York, 18 May 1995, No. 108. 47 Gudlaugsson's comments on the folder of the Budapest painting's photograph in the RKD photo archive at The Hague. 48 Oil on panel, 38,5 x 52 cm, Statens Museum, Copenhagen, Inv. no. 556.
