EMBER, ILDIKÓ: Some Minor Masters on the Peripheries of Rembrandt's Circle

74. Jacob van Spreeuwen: Rest on the Flight to Egypt. Budapest. Museum of Fine Arts to an unknown Leiden pupil of Rembrandt's, linking it to a larger painting with the same subject, 27 generally attributed to Gerard Dou. But most recently it would appear that Eric J. Sluijters' suggestion has solved the dilemma, by calling our attention to the possibility of the authorship of Jacob van Spreeuwen of Leiden. 28 J. van Spreeuwen ( 1609/10 - after 1650), considered to be primarily a genre painter, was a more modestly talented follower of Gerard Dou and Quiringh van Brekelankam. 29 However, Kurt Bauch had already noted that his works on Biblical subjects show the influence of the young Rembrandt, and even though far lower in quality, are still attributed to the latter at times. 30 On the basis of stylistic similarities to the early works of Dou and Isaac de Joudreville Sumowski has postulated that they were students at the same time, but more recent research has shown this hypothesis to be as questionable as 2/ Oil on panel, 76 x 63.5 cm.
