BOARDMAN, JOHN: Near eastern and archaic greek gems in Budapest

21. Greek scaraboid from Corinth. Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts The style of this piece is not easily judged, but the treatment of the head and wing relate it to other gems, executed in a rather dry and summary style, which are discussed by the writer in Archaic Greek Gems. The motif is a common Late Archaic one on gems, but the finer examples show Eros with his body twisted and head turned back. 33 The shape of the scaraboid is a little unusual for this period, with shallow sides and a high back. Probably early fifth century B.C. JOHN BOARDMAN (Oxford) 33 As the gems illustrated and discussed by Beazlev in Lewes House Gems 28, with pis. 2.32, 33; A 4. 17 2 Bulletin 32-33
