VII Southern Transdanubia - VII-1 House from Fadd

VIII VII-1 House, Fadd Christmas in 1907 was a great occasion for József Fülöp and Erzsébet Pánczél: on December 13th their second child, János was born. They lived in this mud walled house from the southern corner of Mezőfold, built in the first half of the 19th century. As the mother was not expected to prepare for Christmas during her confinement relatives and acquaintances brought her food in turns: Strudel, wine and meat soup.The basket of food and wine covered by an ornate woven cloth stands on the kitchen table. B Christmas in olden times people believed that everything placed on the Christmas table became conse­crated, and these sacraments were used as medicines for both people and animals. That is why during celebrations a basket containing hay, maize, garlic and salt tied in a piece of rag was placed on the 'bridge' - crossbar - of the table. On the table there were also cakes with poppy-seed, nuts or without filling, and wine for the guests during the feast. In the parlour a cedar bough decorated with apples, nuts and honey­cake was hung on the painted plate-rack. The custom of putting up Christmas trees did not became common until after World War I. •El
