Discover Rural Hungary!

Discover rural Hungary! We wholeheartedly recommend the Hungarian Open Air Museum to all those who would like to know how people lived in villages and market towns of Hungary during the past two hundred years. The houses which are arranged according to the rural settlement patterns show peasant homes which were inhabited by men, women and children of all classes, who are often known by their name. The everyday life and celebrations of Móric Subert or Sára Döme and many other country people besides are reflected by the objects displayed. The furniture, dishes, tools, household linen surrounding them bear testimony to their life, work, birth, love and death. The Museum is able to recreate past village life for the visitor both through its scenery and interpretation with the help of colours, sounds and smells. Its permanent displays, the regional units show the characteristics of architecture, homes, farming and lifestyle in various regions from the farmsteads in the Great Plains to the clustered settlements of Őrség. In the houses visitors can meet people busy doing daily household chores. Members of our staff are ready to explain how linen was blue-dyed with indigo in the workshop, what a maize-shed is or what life was like in the smoky house. One can see the vegetables and flowers in the gardens and the crops in the fields one can also get to know the traditional Hungarian domestic animals in farmsteads. Our museum is a cultural complex where alongside the permanent exhibitions visitors can discover or reconnect with the peasant world by partaking in educational programmes, summer workshop camps, seasonal festivals, fairs, open air theatre performances, concerts and contemporary art galleries or through our website. We wish you a pleasant day rich in memorable experiences and hope to welcome you again in the future! Dr Miklós Cseri Director-general 6
