X Kisalföld - X-11 Outdoor Ovens from Kisbodak
X-11 Outdoor ovens from Kisbodak v JIE & S Mis Poorer families in the Szigetköz did not have ovens in the kitchen. As they could not build them in the narrow yards because of the risk of fire communal ovens were built on the fringes of the village. The remnants of such ovens in Kisbodak were washed away by the flood in 1954- In the museum 3 ovens of different shapes were reconstructed, each built on a ledge. The building material was clayey mud mixed with chaff and cut into bricks used without any further treatment. Holes were cut in the back for the smoke to escape; ventilation was regulated by means of mud plugs. These bread ovens were jointly built by families or neighbours, usually a group of three. They were maintained jointly, repaired any damage and the surface daubed with clayey mud. The ovens were reconstructed on the basis of old photos. Oven-building courses are held in the museum where the theory and practice of building an outdoor oven can be acquired. For more information visit our website: www.skanzen.hu.
