X Kisalföld - X-3 Votive Chapel from Jánossomorja
The chapel was to be demolished in 1982 therefore its relocation to the museum became possible. The care taken in its rebuilding and restoration is demonstrated by the fact that the uniform flowery layer painted by Joseph Groft after 1864 could be extracted from amongst four layers of paint discovered and restored. The rich furnishings of • I.H.S. The ornate initials on the ceiling are the abbreviation of a Latin transcript of Jesus Christ's Greek name, interpreted by folk etymology in various ways. In German Jesus Heiland der Sunder [Jesus, Saviour of Sinners); in Hungarian Isten Házába Siess [Make Haste to Gods House). the chapel and the presence of the sanctuary lamp indicate that masses were held here on major holidays such as St. Annes day, and according to tradition, at times of drought. People prayed for rain, health and offspring. Nowadays, on the patron saints day, people from Jánossomorja make a pilgrimage to Szentendre and mass is celebrated in the chapel. Weddings and christenings are also held here.
