Gavrilovits Sándor: Úton (Szentendre, Szabadtéri Néprajzi Múzeum, 2012)

SÁNDOR GAVRILOVITS Painter-graphic artist 1944: born in Szentendre. Studies: in different free schools for the arts in Szentendre and Budapest between 1960 and 1981. His masters: Vilmos Szamosi Sós, János Pirk, Pál Deim Member of the Art Foundation (today: National Association of Hungarian Creative Artists) and of the Union of Hungarian Visual Artists and Artist-Craftsmen 1973: First sole exhibition in Budapest He had several sole exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions and biennales. His most important exhibitions were in: 1982: Buda Castle 1992: Józsefvárosi Gallery 1992, 1996: Aluljáró Gallery, Szentendre; 1994: Szentendre Picture Gallery (together with Pál Deim and Lajos Velekei József) His paintings are in Hungarian museums and in private collections abroad. His words about himself: „I had a strange desire and motivation to organise unique, significant cultural programs. About hundred thousand people visited these events taking place in exciting spaces, involving different arts and accompanied by the spectators' touching expression of approval: 1978: Szentendre, Kapualj Gallery. The gathering took place in a Baroque gateway leading to a built-in yard. Paintings, lot of plants, light, good background music and cleanliness contributed to the particular atmosphere. 1982: Buda Castle, Gothic building with gateway and garden with ancient ruins. Built installation, interesting sound and light effects and appropriate floral zone served as atmospheric decor. 1992: Szentendre Aluljáró Gallery. Permanent service day and night. An enchanted space was created as the scene for presenting paintings, poems and live music in an environment of light, plants and cleanliness. 1994: Szentendre Aluljáró Gallery. National and interna­tional reactions. The open space is the town's cultural chapel. The masses visited the event day and night. 1998: Szentendre Open Gates Gallery Theatre. Imposing building with built cloisters, gateways in the yard, with a lot of light and good background music, plants, theatre, literature and music programs, special and unique artistic objects. The event was a real folk feast. These programs lasted one-two months. They have been set up with great pretensions creating new forms of entertainment, where masses and national culture found each other. My masters and examples: Vilmos Szamosi Sós, gold medallist in the World Exhibition in Paris. Because he was a man of principles, communism made him impossible. János Pirk is a human and professional etalon! Pál Deim is my contemporary, my friend. He taught me how to compose a picture in simple sentences. I thank them." 5
