Budapest Friderika Biró FLOWERS ON THE BATTLEFIELD There is a real story behind the enigmatic title. The ‘pro­tagonists’ are two cradles. One of them was made during the last winter of the Great War in 1917-18 in Adelsberg (now Postojna) on the Italian front line or Mautersdorf (now Matejna vas) also situated in the area. The other was also designed here during these months. The designer of the cradles was a sculptor and designer, who as a lieutenant was posted at the so called art troop operating in the press-headquarters of the Italian front line. He worked there for several years. Similarly to his fellow artists, he made portraits, reliefs, plaques of sol­diers, officers, and he also designed war memorials. Supposedly, the design of the first cradle was custom made according to his superior’s order. He designed and made the second one for his own children. The latter was already made at home in Budapest. On the basis of the surviving documents, sketches, plans, photos and objects not only do we get to know the intriguing story of the two cradles, but these painted and carved cradles are also rare examples of the new artistic movement and style of the early 20th century, the short period of time when the design, the decorati­ve elements and motifs of peasant furniture had an impact on middle-class art nouveau interior design, cus­tom made furniture and on its ornamental features. 209
