Sándor Aranyos, Tamara Faár, Zsuzsa Kovács, Zsolt Sári, Zsófia Szigethy THE YEAR OF THE LAMB MORE THAN YOU WOULD THINK This impressive slogan in the subtitle launched the Year of the Lamb, our thematic program series in the Hungarian Open Air Museum. The exhibitions, the living museum settings, the festivals, the prominent programs, which took place in 2014 in the Hungarian Open Air Museum and in the member institution in Szenna, were accomplished as part of a transnational tender and thanks to the co-financing of the framework program of Culture 2007-201 3 of the European Union with the title: “Canepal: Culture and Nature: The European Heritage of Sheep Farming and Pastoral Life”. The main objective of the project was to draw the attention of professionals and amateurs to the European sheep farming and pastoral life and with this to promote knowledge about and efforts for preserving this common cultural heritage. The realization began in 2010. Personnel of the following institutions co-operated in order to approach the subject from several sides and to provide the research with large amounts of information: National Museum of History, Sofia, Bulgaria, Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Estonian University of Life Sciences Tartu, Estonia, PRISMA Centre for Development Studies, Athens, Greece, Cultural and Social Digital Documentation Laboratory, School of Sociology, University of the Aegean, Mytilini, Greece, AFMA- Federation of Agricultural Museums and Rural Heritage, Paris, France, Muzeum Kresów in Lubaczów, Lubaczów, Poland, Research Unit of Tourism and Cultural Economics, University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. During the past four years several studies have been written, an educational game, a CD with pastoral music, a DVD with a collection of digital maps tracing the trans- humance paths in Europe have been made and thematic exhibitions were organised in six countries. In the final year of the programs, in 2014, the Skanzen’s management decided that it is insufficient to promote the results in a closing and summarizing exhibition. It is necessary to dedicate a whole museum season to the topic. Within the Year of the Lamb the Museum opened four major exhibitions, completed our alternative installations and created five new living settings. We rearranged three existing settings in the function of the topic. We incorporated some elements of the subject in the Museum’s bigger festivals, which we elaborated in detail and presented during four thematic weekends. Our programs organised outside the Museum dealt with the subject of lamb too. Further to the mentioned programs the Museum has published two catalogues and a cookery book. All what could not be executed this year and in these programs, shall be presented to our visitors in 2015, when we will treat the topic further within the programs of the ‘Year of the Shepherd’. 343
