V - „'Tis enough if it shines for me” - Beneath the Oaks (Thomas Cooper)

Beneath the oaks I found my home, No matter where My footsteps strayed. Though Canaan, yet This earth remained To me always A foreign place. Beneath the oaks I still today Will lose myself In idle dream. I hear the splash Of stately ships. It’s but the mill That churns the stream. Beneath the oaks the evening falls, and cold winds blow, a coming gale. I hurry home, A safer place, For old men sick, For old men frail. Beneath the oaks I long to lie, When someday soon I make my bed. I’ll rest my dust, And let there rise a cross of oak beside my head.
