V - „'Tis enough if it shines for me” - Beneath the Oaks (Thomas Cooper)
Beneath the Oaks Beneath the oaks, I like to rest, Where light and shade Play on the leas, Far from the din Of city streets, Where streaks of sky Shine through the trees. Beneath the oaks I shed the weight of years and am A child again, Like when I climbed The slender trunk, Where starling sings And raucous wren. Beneath the oaks With boyhood friends We’d light a blaze To warm the dell. And roast a quail Upon the spit And trundle home When darkness fell. Beneath the oaks I loved to he, And leave the birds To their refrains. A child, I let My fancy fly To distant shores And sunlit plains.
