III - „His voice, once fine and heady, still a grumble deep” - Poem for an Occasion (Thomas Cooper)

May great men of our nation rise, If great men there still be on hand, and give them wealth, that they may give, but not beat drums across the land. May they show love of nation true, And faithfully praise homeland too! This new year may the Lord provide Whatever yet we’ve been denied. Let writer no more long to claw The eyes from fellow writer’s brow. Let there be no eclipse this year Or frost that freezes bud on bough. May men earn honor and acclaim, And praises for their family name. This new year may the Lord provide Whatever yet we’ve been denied. To what then shall I drink a toast? The pledge of woman true and fair? To friendship, courage, loyalty, Or other myths by which we swear? The virtues which elsewhere abound Sometimes are scarce among us found. The Lord knows, then, what to provide, Whatever yet we’ve been denied.
