Left-wing Dictionary agitation: activity aimed at persuasion, in the general and political senses. Above all, it meant winning over inactive, relatively politically unaware sections of society (or individuals). communist party: sought revolution and dictatorship of the proletariat as the only possible way to achieving representation for workers. They operated illegally in Hungary between the two world wars. There were several other groups that called themselves „communist" during the period, but they had ideological differences with the KMP. lollipopping: putting up stickers. Red Aid: based on an international model, collections for political prisoners and their families (e.g. in the form of donation stamps) in the early 1920s. In Horány, collections were made under the cover name „boot fund”. social democratic party: envisaged the attainment of socialism and the solution of social problems, by reform, through the institutions of parliamentary democracy (workers’ representation, universal franchise). They were strongly affiliated to the trade union movement. The right wing szocdems signed the Bethlen- Peyer Pact (1921), a compromise with the system by which they renounced political activity in their organisations, for fear of prohibition. 37
