Biography of Anna Lesznai

1932 She publishes an anthology of the collection of the most beautiful Hungarian love poems. Attila József, the great poet helps her in this work. As usual in the case of her books, she draws the illustrations and the cover of the book, too. 1932-1938 She takes part in several group exhibitions in Budapest. 1939-1942 Lesznai Anna and her husband, Tibor Gergely are forced to emigrate from Europe, and they establish their new home in the USA. She takes up teaching courses, she leads seminars on the history of design and gives practical de sign courses in several colleges and universities. 1945 Her first born son Károly Garay dies in a military action in Körtvélyes. 1946 She sets up her private art school, and works with great effort on her novel, which, using biographical elements, draws a comprehensive view on the life of two families in the period of 1880-1920 in Hungary. She turns again to embroidery and creates new, very special techniques of work. 1966 She pays a visit to Hungary when her novel is published in Budapest. This is the first time after 26 years of living as an immigrant in the USA. 1966. October 2. Anna Lesznai dies in New York. According to her last will, her remains are re-buried in her brother’s grave in Budapest. She donated her artistic and literary works to Hungarian public collections, so they are kept in the Petőfi Museum of Literature, the Hungarian National Gallery (Budapest) and Hatvány Lajos Museum (Hatvan). 531
