154 Comm. Hist. Artis Med. Suppl. 11 — 12 (1979) of hellebore species has rather disappeared from the Hungarian speaking territories. The inflammatory effect of hellebore would be used for poisoning (self mutilation to escape military service, suicide). The root of hellebore is still used in the traditional way in popular veterinary medicine. The root is stubbed into the flesh of horses or cows or drawn into the ears of pigs and sheep so as the consequent local inflammation may increase the resistance of the animal organism (stimulation therapy). Drawing in roots is supposed to have been an ancient custom among the Hungarian people, too. The hellebore species have an important role in this method. G. KÓCZ1ÁN, M. pharm.
