ADATTÁR — DOCUMENTS - EMED, Alexander: Schulhof Vilmos és Schulhof Ödön

SUMMARY Present article contains the short biography of the Schulhof brothers, who played an important role in the history of Hungarian balneology, and especially in the development of the Hungarian spa, Hévíz. The older brother Vilmos (1874-1944) after studies in Budapest and Berlin was employed in Hévíz in 1906 as physician of the spa. Thanks to his activity the spa developed quickly using the most recent healing methods of the age. His books on the therapeutic use of the water of the Hévíz-lake were translated even to German, while his articles were published in Hungarian and German balneological journals. He was killed in Auschwitz in 1944. His younger brother, Ödön (1896-1978) after studies in Budapest and Berlin worked as internist. After the Communist Revolution in 1919, having taken an active part in the union movement, he was dismissed. Leaving Hungary he spent fruitful years in German universities. Returning home he worked as radiologist for several institutions. In the 3 Oies he developed an internationally accepted method for the sacroiliacal x-ray diagnostics. He survived the persecutions, and begun his academic career by writing the first Hungarian textbook for reumatology. He proved to be not only a prolific scientific writer, but an eminent organizer and manager as well. The National Institute for Balneology and later the National Institute for Reumatology and Physicotherapy were both founded and headed by him. He presided the Hungarian Society for Balneology as well. The memory of the Schulhof brothers is served by a memorial tablet on the wall of the National Institute for Physicotherapy.
