Gottsegen György jelentős helyet töltött be a magyar orvostudomány történetében. Ö volt az, aki 1957-ben mostoha, szegényes körülmények között a kor színvonalán megteremtette a magyar kardiológiát. Halálának negyvenedik évfordulóján az egész magyar orvostársadalom nevében tisztelgek emléke előtt. ALEXANDER EMED, MD. pediatrician Einstein Str. 127. 34061 Haifa ISRAEL SUMMARY Dr. György Gottsegen (1906-1965), the founder of the modern Hungarian cardiology was born in Budapest, as a son of a well-to-do Jewish lawyer. He attended his schools in Budapest, and studied medicine in Vienna. Having received his medical diplôme he completed his studies in Darmstadt and Ratibor. Returning home he worked first for the St.Stephan's Hospital, Budapest, then from 1934 for the Jewish Hospital - one of the most developed institutes of the country. After a difficult period of humiliating forced labour service he run a privat hospital in his flat helping dozens of people to survive the persecutions. His career actually begun only after the war: in this period he headed several institutions and departments, founded a cardiopulmonal laboratory and introduced the use of heart catheter in Hungary. In 1957 the first Hungarian institute for cardiology was founded by his initiative, and was headed also by him. In the 60ies Gottsegen - being an acknowledged scientist even abroad - became a leading personality in the professional medical administration. His sudden death, caused by a heart-attack interrupted his fruitful activity. Present article was written for the 100th anniversary of his birth.
