ADATTÁR - DOCUMENTS - Józsa László: Az orvosi, állatorvosi és gyógyszerészeti irodalom Bizáncban

SUMMARY Professor Józsa - as a continuation of his former article published in the previous issue of our journal - in this prosopographical collection attempts to give a comprehensive overview on the Byzantine medical literature and authors, respectively. Byzantine medical authors are listed here in a possible chronological order, from the 4th up to the 15th century. At every item we can find a short biography - in the case, it is known - the titles and contents of the main works, and at last a concise presentation of the role the physician in question played in the history of medicine. While evaluating the activity of the single medical writers, author actually affords a comprehensive history of the Byzantine medical literature, emphasizing the fact, that the Byzantine medicine has played a much more essential role in the development of the European medical thought, than it is generally supposed to have had. The chronological part of the article is supplemented by a selection from the veterinary literature of the Empire, and by some other - non medical - historical or literary works, which included passages of medical importance.
