KÖZLEMÉNYEK - COMMUNICATIONS - NAMAL, Arin - HONTI József: Efforts in 1947 to make Prof. Dr. Ernestus de Balogh (1890-1964) work for the University of Istanbul. (Erőfeszítések annak érdekében, hogy Balogh Ernő professzor (1890-1964) az Isztambuli Egyetemen dolgozhassék.)

Attempts for Balogh Starting Hamit Kosay, the general manager of Ancient Works and Museums of Republic of Turkey wrote a letter to the Ministry of National Education on 22 November 1946: "Professor of Turcology and academician at the University of Budapest, Németh Gyula was the teacher of sainted Ragip Hulusi Özdein and mine. He has a wide personal recognition amongst the Ministry people as he joined II Turkish History Meeting as a special guest of Atatürk. In his personal letter dated 14 November 1946 addressed to me, Professor Gyula from Faculty of Medicine in Budapest strongly recommended his fellow Professor Ernő Balogh, internationally well-reputed in the field of cancer researches but presently jobless due to recent developments, to the vacant position of Professor Oberndorfer. I think that a person recommended by Prof. Gyula, who is a well-known friend of Turkish people and who has many contributions to Turkish culture, would be beneficial for our country. I would kindly request his wish to be considered. E. de Balogh' s titles and address are as follows: "Ane. Professeur á la Faculté de Médecine Directeur de L'institut pour L'étude expérimentale du cancer, Président de la Section des recherches Cancerologiques de la Société des Pathologistes. Hongrois Budapest .XI Himfy u.7 Budapest-Hongrie"'^ These efforts could reach Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine only in May 1947. First, associates of Cancer Institute submit their opinions to the Dean on 30 May 1947: "As we sincerely believe that our Institute will gain advantage of Professor Balogh who conducted Institute for the Experimental Cancer Researches of University of Budapest between the years 1927-1945, we have unanimously decided to attempt for his invitation. Signature: Professor Üveis Maskar, General Secretary of the Cancer Institute". In the files opened for Balogh 6 at the Istanbul University, both his Curriculum Vitae and his publication list are available. Including titles like "cancer", "air embolies", "biological effects of height", "general pathological problems by infections", "infection pathology", "helminthiasis", "problems related to general and special pathology", "scientific achievements of pathologists passed away", "reforming the medical education", "modern advances in pathological research", a total of 135 publications are listed here. Meantime, the Board of Professors at the Faculty of Medicine founded a commission and demanded a report to be prepared about the scientific studies of Balogh. The report submitted to the Deanery on 9 June 1947 was prepared by this commission consisting of three valued academicians. The very meticulously analyse of all the scientific publications of Balogh until the year 1947 was of such an interesting nature that it might be the core of a separate article. 7 5 This document and the other ones and the letters signed by Balogh himself and referred to in this article, are kept in a file in the name of Ernő Balogh (File No.4 109/455) at the Istanbul University Rectorate, Archives of Personnel Department. Therefore, the name of the archive will not be repeated when several documents within the article are referred. There is a file ( 41010-1729) opened to the name of E. Balogh in Istanbul University, Istanbul Medical Faculty .Archive of Personnel Department." In this file as well, there is one sample copy of the correspondence in the Balogh file at the Rectorate. 6 Honti, József: Balogh Ernő (1890-1964). In: Híres magyar on'osok. 3.
