GABRIELLA JANTSITS Dr. Univ. 1061 Budapest, Anker köz 1. HUNGARY SUMMARY Károly Heitzmann, born in 1836, in Vinkovce (Croatia) finished his medical studies at Vienna and worked as an assistant professor under Rokitansky 's supervision. In 1874 he left for the United States, where he settled in New York. He organised there successful private courses for laboratory technics and published more than 50 articles in American medical journals. Based on his anatomical knowledge he began with illustrating his own articles and later he contributed to several important anatomical handbooks and atlases of his Austrian and Hungarian counterparts.
