63 "Dumas', Daudet's, Ambroise Thomas', Gounod's physician was this Israelite from Hungary, whose consulting room was at tented day after day by the most illustrious patients of Paris in humble crowds. "When he felt his end to come, he shut up and hid himself so as no one could see him perish. He wanted not to die but to disappear. Death was the most nasty thing in the world for him. Dying, to die

—he went through it behind the closed doors (which only opened to receive a little food)—as if he committed some viciousness. No one saw him for a month. And in the last days when he could not even eat, in the desperate return of his last strength he blocked up his door. When it was broken in he had been dead for 18 hours. . . " He was buried in Paris, first temporarily in the Cimetière du Nord, later in 1899 on the Montmartre at St. Vincent where his admirers and friends had a granite memorial erected with a bust in bronze. His grave-stone reads: "Au docteur David Gruby 1810-1898." Gruby who loved so much Montmartre sleeps his eternal dream there opposite his observatory.

65 On 10 March 1957 a group of pilgrims visited the tomb lead by the medical historian Théodorides. The route went up to the famous house of rue St. Lazare and to the observatory of rue Lepic no more to be seen. Összefoglalás Gruby Dávid azok közé a jeles magyar orvosok közé tartozik, akik külföldön működve világhírt szereztek. Küzdelmes és tanulságos életéről a franciák könyveket írtak. Számos író — Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, Alfons Daudet — világhírű regényekben örökítette meg alakját. A magyar írók és orvostörténészek még adósok életrajzának megírásával. Gruby Dávid élete három szakaszra osztható : első az orvosavatásig terjedő magyarországi és ausztriai szakasz, második a tudományos eredményeket alkotó tizennyolc esztendő, a harmadik az orvosi gyakorlat, a „praxis" szakasza. A dolgozat Gruby Dávid életének áttekintése során újonnan feltárt tényeket is tartalmaz: Gruby kapcsolatát a Teleki és De Gerando családdal, a szintén magyar származású párizsi anatómia professzorral, Mandl Lajos (Lázár)-ral és Szomory Dezsővel.
