Camus, az egzisztencialista író, egyik regényében, a Pestisben, szerepeltet egy papot, aki a járvány kitörése kezdetén még örül is, hogy üres temploma a megijedt emberekkel megtelik. Aztán ő kezd halálosan félni. Később Önként jelentkezik az orvosnál és betegeket ápol, végül maga is meghal. Komáromi Csipkés György nem örülhetett a járványnak, hiszen százakat kísért el hívei közül a temetőbe. Az élőket buzdítja, hogy pánikba ne essenek, betegeket látogat és egymás segítésére int. Azután pedig, hogy megtette, ami tőle telt, meg is írta azt, amit tudott. Amit megírt, ma már csak orvostörténeti kuriózum. Emberi alakja egy régi és tudatlanságtól, szenvedésektől sötét kor távolságából mégis rokonszenves körvonalakkal bontakozik ki a mai kutató előtt. S H m m a r y From among the many published works of György Komáromi Csipkés (1628—1678), professor of Debrecen and Calvinist preacher, this article present the volume Pestis pestise (,,The plague of the plague"), published in Debrecen, in 1664. Komáromi Csipkés's work is a Hungarian version of the funeral speech he held in Latin at the time of the epidemic of plague in Debrecen. He deals with the cause and characterization of the plague as well as with the defence against it in a theological framework. He disapproves of the use of drugs theologically judged as superstitious, and even in connection with medically acceptable drugs he emphasizes that death cannot be avoided, at best the pains can be eased. The author's main message deriving from his view is that one must not escape from the plague because it helps the spread of the epidemic, and the ill is left alone, but mainly because one cannot avoid it anyhow.
