TANULMÁNYOK - Szőkefalvi-Nagy Zoltán -Spielmann József: Nyulas Ferenc életére és működésére vonatkozó újabb adatok

Already as protomedicus he dealt with the chemical composition of the medicinal waters and their therapeutic effects. After his death, in 1812, the authorities in Vienna decided to have his work on the mineral waters of Borszék translated and published. Unfortunately, however, the manuscript was not found and has not turned up ever since. Similarly we must write off his botanical and linguistical works often mentioned by his contemporaries. His death occured with tragic suddenness on 27th December 1808. On the basis of the mourning-card and the official documents we may surmise that it was caused by tubercolosis. The same unsparing malady might have caused the early death of seven of his children, so at his grave only one daughter could stand together with his widow. In the light of the newly found material we can rightly look upon Ferenc Nyulas as a physician with progressive views, an outstanding chemist, botanist and health organizer, one of the best products of Hungarian science in an age long past.
