The remark of Benedek referred to the three hundred years or more exactly 306 years, which was covered in the comprehensive analysis of the statistical figures of several hospitals (four in London, two in Dublin and one in Edinburgh) by Semmelweis in his "Open letter to all the professors of obstetrics". Benedek's opinion was based on an 1863 lecture by Spaeth, professor of obstetrics in Vienna, where the professor - not mentioning any names —
