KISEBB KÖZLEMÉNYEK - Varannai Gyula: Néhány numizmatikai emlék a Budapesti Orvostudományi Egyetem első évszázadával kapcsolatban

SUMMARY Van Swieten was one of the organizers of the Medical Faculty of Pázmány University at Nagyszombat. His memory is kept by two medals to be found now in the Semmelweis Medical Historical Museum. The medical teaching at the University of Nagyszombat was based on the worldfamous work of Hermann Boerhave : Aphorismi de cognoscendis et curandis morbis. Two medals are reminding us of him; they are the posthumous composition of Durand. A compendium of physiology written by Albert Holler was widely used as obligatory textbook at the medical faculty of Nagyszombat. Holler's memory is remembered by two medals in the Semmelweis Museum. In honour of the issue of the first Ratio Educationis (25th of June, 1780), an order regulating the public and university education, was minted a silver medal. King Francis donated in 1819 ornamental emblems to the rector and dean of the university. The dean's badge medal of the Medical Faculty was made by /. B. Harnisch. A golden medal is hanging on the chain, but we know some silver ones too. In 1830, at the 50th anniversary of the transferring of the University to Buda golden and silver medals were minted partly for rewarding of eminent students. There were among them 3 medical students too. We are showing now some of those medals preserved in the Semmelweis Museum, which are in connection in some respects with the medical faculty. They are the medals of Stifft, Bene, Markusovszky. The succeeding generations expressed their acknowledgement in medals also for services rendered by that medical school, which was formed as a group round János Balassa, the great Hungarian surgeon and organizer. The best Hungarian physician was rewarded every year with the Balassa-medal made by Ö. Fülöp Beck. 1 his period of rewarding lasted nearly 40 years. We are finishing now the history of the first hundred years of the medical faculty with mentioning of a bronze medal portraying Ágoston Trefort, Minister of Education, who rendered great services to the university by raising the Hungarian medical training to a high level.
