Ehrlich orvosi tanulmányai során az első komoly érdeklődést bizonyos problémák iránt K. Geibelnek (később a gyógyszertan professzora a kievi egyetemen) az ólommérgezésekről írt cikke váltotta ki. Később a szentpétervári Iversen volt az első, aki különböző betegségek kezelésénél a Salvarsant alkalmazta, illetve kipróbálta. Sok figyelmet szentelt Ehrlich a kiváló orosz mikrobiológus, Gabrichewsky kísérleteinek. Számos orosz orvos tanult és dolgozott Ehrlich laboratóriumában.
