pictures, preserved by the family, have seen several publications and have passed into the hands of the Semmelweis Medical Historical Museum and where they can be seen in the Semmelweis memorial room [5]. (Size: 34x26 cms.). This picture served as model for a picture (1883) by Mór Than (1828-1899) [6] as well as for later ones including a portrait by a living artist, István Boldizsár [7], III. A photo of Ignác Semmelweis, taken in 1858, shows him in a grey tail­coat. The original copy was presented to the Medical Historical Museum of the Budapest Medical Association in 1906 by dr. Arthur Irsai, it was published in 1938 by Korbuly and later by Beruti [8]. This original photo has not been re­covered after the second world war, so it is known only from the earlier publica­tions. IV. There is a photo of Ignác Semmelweis from 1860 by F. Kozmata, a photo­grapher in Pest, preserved for us in B ruck's book [9]. The whereabouts of the original were not known by Korbuly either. A copperplate in 1894 by Jenő Doby, a drawing at the same time by Károly Cserna (in the Vasárnapi Újság), another oil-painting by Mór Than (1884) [10] and numerous other subsequent repre­sentations were based upon that one.
