The „Lex sanitaria Leopoldina", issued in 1678 deals mainly with the prophylaxis of pestilence and with the preparation of medicaments. Szepes' mentions that Leopold I. had also ordered the yearly official control of pharmacies. I have read through the original German text of this law but could not find in it any direction of this sense. It is likewise Szepes' who mentions that „the all-comprising attention of Joseph II. did not leave out of mind the pharma­cies, either. Through the governorship (Consilium Regii locurn­tenentiale) he brought to the notice of the counties to inspect the pharmacies in their regian". The auther presented in his paper the report of such an official inspection described in Ger­man language and he commented also the text. He stated from the reports of the control in other pharmacies that Eger and Gyöngyös had in those times 2 pharmacies each and that there was I in Hatvan, this being the total sum of the pharmacies Ín the county of Heves and all of them were owned by monastic orders. In accordance with this measure the counties and free royal towns yearly reports about the health conditions of their region to the council of the governo rgeneral which moved in 1783 from Pozsony to Buda. The report was sent by the town or county magistracy on the basis of the medical officier's (physicus) ac­counts. Such a report generally comprised 1. the inspection of pharmacies (Relatio super viisitatis Apothecis), 2. the death cases (Consignatio super mortalitatis), 3. the weather (Mutatio athmo­spherae; Hydrographia), 4. the staff engaded in medical treat­ment (Status personalis medicum, dealing with physicians, sur­geons, veterinary surgeons, pharmacists, midwives as well). 5. sanitary conditions, diseases (Relatio super negotio Sanitatis) 6. inoculations (Vaccinatio).
