SUMMARY As a result of the sharp break between mediaeval and modern sciences, most of the scientific activities of G. Cardano, based essentially on scholastic doctrines, have been forgotten. The scientist of the i6th century is characterized by a) extreme subjectivity, b) excessive intellectuality, c) tendency to mysticism. These features are detectable in G. Cardano, s life and personality and fundamen­tally determined his scientific activities. Author discusses at length the factors making G. Cardano's life difficult. These were: his passionate nature, his illnesses, political circumstances, family problems. Detailed descriptions are presented of two medical activities, a philosophical debate of G. Cardano, and finally of the tragic circumstances of the execution of his son. The discussion of the biography of this great renaissance scientist vloses with a few charasteristic quotations.
