N. KOVÁCS TÍMEA: A kultúra metaforái
WESSELY ANNA 1998 A kultúra szociológiai tanulmányozása. In A kultúra szociológiája. Wessely Anna, szerk. 7-27. Budapest: Osiris. TÍMEA N. KOVÁCS The methaphors of culture According the Clifford Geertz, cultural anthropology is about nothing but the definition of the concept of 'culture'. It follows that the history of this held of inquiry is also nothing more than the summary of attempts to dehne this term. 'Culture' has become now not only one of the central categories in social and cultural sciences, around which subfields are organised, it is also at the same time a basic part of everyday talks. This paper wishes to invertigate the dynamic patterns of the relationship between scientific and common discources. What kind of meanings and social practices are produced, moved and exchanged within this relatinship? The first part is about the role culture played in European thinking of the Other. After this the author tries to answer the question of how cultural anthropology attempted to regain this concept from other kinds of social discourse, and how it tried form these variants to a scientific object. At the end, the focus is on the very relationship of culture which has been made 'scientific' and the idea of borders, and the question of its rhetorical potential.
