A communication-theoretical and social scientific approach to the collection of a Moldavian religious narrative The study seeks to examine situations in which belief is activated. Situations in which "self" meets "other" force the expression of distinctions between the two; and it is as a function of this recursive definition that the author analyses attitudes toward beliefs. The initial hypothesis is that the homeyness and intimate tone of the verbal forum largely influence what is read into a narrative and what is discovered about the culture it represents: does the narrative lie at the periphery of a life-world or its core? To what depths - from surface communication to the culture of an entire community - does the "hidden level" of meaning in a cultural text go or not go? To what extent is the relationship intertwined with observation, and to what extent does it obstruct the process of understanding? In the author's view, the two must be separated and, perhaps, the tacit agreement between researcher and subject re-examined.
