An experiment in the "post-structuralist" analysis of a sub-culture Like many other extreme action sports, skateboarding has recently become very popular among Hungarian youth. However, skateboarding is seen by many as more than a sport: for some, it is a lifestyle, while for others, it is a craze. There is also some contention as to whether skateboarding is a sport at all, or simply a form of destructive hooliganism. The present study analyses the skateboarding subculture in an attempt to illuminate how these varying points of view are related to the history of the sport and to the practices pursued by skateboard enthusiasts. First, the author outlines the theoretical framework within which the phenomenon will be analysed, then discusses various aspects of skateboarding in considerable detail, in the end returning to the original theoretical framework and examining how aspects of the sport fall into place within it.
