TÜNDE TURAI "We did it voluntarily by force". Alternative biographies after the political system's change in the 1940s By analyzing six biographies, the author aims to analyse how changes in the official political sphere influenced everyday agrarian life after the socialist political system came into power in Romania in the 1940s. One of the questions facing people was how the previous "general life-scenario" could continue under the new circumstances, and what sort of new strategies had to be invented and applied in response to these. The life strategies diffused in the socialist press, which aimed to both provide an example and affect career orientations, are also examined. Finally, the prescriptive models of life strategies and real life histories are compared to reveal the concordances and differences at the macro and the micro levels.
